Elliottville Fire Department Receives Updated ISO Classification

Effective February 1, 2026, the Elliottville Fire Department has received an updated Public Protection Classification of 06/6X from the Insurance Services Office (ISO), a notable improvement from the department’s previous 9/10 rating. This upgrade represents years of investment in equipment, training, and operational improvements that strengthen the department’s ability to protect residents and property.

ISO evaluates fire departments across the country on their effectiveness in responding to and controlling structure fires. Ratings range from 1 to 10, with Class 1 representing the highest level of fire protection. The system considers multiple factors, including firefighter staffing levels, training programs, emergency response times, equipment quality, water supply availability, and the capabilities of local dispatch services.

A Class 6 rating indicates strong fire protection services and reflects that Elliottville Fire Department is now performing near a Class 5 level, according to ISO. The “6X” designation specifically applies to properties that are farther than a certain distance from a recognized water supply, such as a public hydrant or water source. This improvement highlights both the department’s ongoing commitment to operational excellence and its ability to respond effectively across the community.

While ISO ratings do not directly set insurance premiums, many insurance companies use them when evaluating risk. As a result, some homeowners and businesses within the department’s coverage area may see changes in insurance rates. Residents are encouraged to reach out to their insurance providers to understand how this updated rating could impact their individual policy.

This upgrade also serves as an important indicator of the department’s dedication to public safety. It reflects improvements in firefighter training, equipment, staffing, and emergency response capabilities, and reassures the community that the Elliottville Fire Department is well-prepared to respond quickly and effectively in emergencies.
