Safe Haven Baby Box Ribbon Cutting
Alongside the Morehead-Rowan County Chamber of Commerce, City of Morehead, and many incredible community partners, we celebrated the dedication and official opening of the 61st Safe Haven Baby Box in Kentucky! The location of the new Safe Haven Baby Box at Rowan County EMS' Station 1 is 200 American Legion Way. This is something we are proud to have here in our County, and we're even prouder of the community that made this possible.
A Safe Haven Baby Box is a secure, temperature-controlled box installed at places like hospitals, fire stations, or EMS buildings that allows a parent to safely and anonymously surrender a newborn they are unable to care for.
When a baby is placed inside, the box locks automatically and alerts on-site staff immediately, ensuring the infant receives prompt medical care. The program operates under state Safe Haven laws, which protect the parent from criminal charges as long as the baby is unharmed and surrendered within a specified age limit. In short: it’s about saving infant lives, preventing unsafe abandonment, and providing a compassionate last-resort option in crisis situations. We honor and respect the courage of parents who make this difficult decision. This box represents hope, safety and compassion for our most vulnerable.
